About the Impreza WRX Club of Queensland

The Impeza WRX Club of Queensland Inc (or WRX Club) is a group of like minded people who share a passion for Subaru's legendary car. The club is focussed on the model, but as things have evolved, the brand and model loyalty continues to attract members who either aspire to own the car, or once did; in fact these days, many members are on their second (or third!) WRX. The club is affiliated with both Subaru (http://www.subaru.com.au) and CAMS (http://www.cams.com.au) making this an ideal platform for you to link your car to a group of enthusiasts who feel the same way.

The influence and history of the brand and model is such that 10 years on, owners of Liberty, Forester, and non-turbo Impreza models join in. All enthusiasts are welcome through our doors and are encouraged to come share our passion for driving and cars.

The story so far: Our Club History

The WRX Club of Queensland was officially formed on the 17th of February 1998 after many months of organising. Inaugural club president, Jeff Wasley started the ground work for the club in October 1997 when he placed an article in Fast Fours & Rotaries magazine to see if there was anyone interested in starting a club. At the same time George Kafantaris had been collecting names of WRX owners interested in starting a club. They pooled their contacts and soon had over 20 interested WRX owners. The first get-together was in a shopping centre car park on a Thursday night in December 1997 at Sunnybank. Quite a few WRX owners would meet there every Thursday night, so this seemed the logical place to see what sort of interest there would be in starting a club. Over 15 WRX owners turned up that night so there was obviously a keen interest in the formation of a club. From then on leaflets were put on windscreens, WRX owners pulled over and told about the starting of the club, leading to the enduring club today.

The First Event

The first organised event was held at Mt Cotton on the 4th of January 1998. Seven WRX’s turned up to this driver training day, and considering the time of year and the short period of time to organise, it was a good result. At the very next meeting a provisional committee was formed. After several more meetings and a lot of time put in by Louise Hagan, the then legal eagle, the club was formed officially on the 17th of February 1998. The first full meeting of the newly formed association was held on the 3rd of March 1998 at Sunnybank High School. About 30 people attended this first meeting and 15 joined on the night.

...and Today

Today the club holds meetings once a month on the second Tuesday of each month, and regularly sees a third of the membership turn up to see presentations on diverse topics such as fuel, suspension setup, car cleaning products and more by various leading vendors and experts in their field. Members often appreciate the reach the club has when key note speakers such as rally drivers turn up to talk about their careers and driving history.

......and the Events Today

We have an active social calendar typically catering for at least two events per month. The variety in these will appeal to everyone, varying from cruises, dinners, tech nights, install days, and charity events.

As well as the social events, the club also participates in an active Motorsport calendar, usually packed with 30 events per year. This sees WRXs competing in everything from street sprints, circuit racing, dirt circuit, and the very competitive and well supported Queensland Inter-club Challenge.

Members

The club currently boasts over 250 members each year. Membership is focussed on WRX, STi, Liberty RS & GT, and Forester GT & XT owners. However if you own a Turbo Subaru, or just have a passion for a dedicated car club like ours, you are most welcome.

Members receive a membership pack with club sticker, membership card, and whatever other goodies we can rustle up for your membership pack from the club's sponsors. Members gain free access to a variety of club equipment such as the Club Marquees, G-Tech timer, Delta Dash, DVDs, Books and more. Club members are also able to participate in organised social and motorsport events, receive copies of the magazine, and access the club's online forum. Discounts at various businesses are also available to Members. Details on obtaining Membership can be found by following the links on our home page.

The Magazine

A key part of membership is the included subscription to the club magazine. This is produced seasonally in hard copy with varying and interesting articles on everything from racing stories, club event reports, detailed insights on members cars, photo shoots, and all sorts of personal moments that members want to share. The magazine is also a great "to hand" tool for members to stay on top of the busy events calendar. The magazine is an outstanding presentation with high quality professional printing and layout which is supported by many of the clubs sponsors.
