1st - CyberEvo - Japan, 2nd - Sierra Sierra - USA, 3rd - Tomei/Cusco - Japan

FROM Superlap website:

Engines were blown and body kits literally torn from cars, as the World Time Attack competitors pushed themselves and their machines to the limit.

Team USA took an early lead with the Sierra Sierra EVO setting a blistering lap time of 1:32.2480 on Day 1 as the fastest of Japanese teams CyberEVO nearly destroyed their engine in the heat of the battle for the lead. Those predicting Day 2 to be a one-horse-race however, were proved wrong.

CyberEVO pit crew worked overnight fixing the engine and on their first morning session smashed Mark Skaife's long-standing V8 Supercar lap record by a full second, taking the lead from Team Sierra Sierra. The Americans responded by bettering their Friday lap time and the head-to-head battle between the two Mitsubishis continued throughout Day 2, both surpassing even the most optimistic of lap time predictions.

CyberEVO's driver - Eiji "Tarzan" Yamada drove the car hard till the very last lap, where after turning hard into Turn 1, the downforce on the rear wing caused it to physically tear off the car. David Empringham pushed the Sierra Sierra EVO hard for the win, finishing only 1.29 seconds behind CyberEvo's winning lap time of 1:30.5870.

In third place, flanking Sierra Sierra on both sides was "Tarzan" Yamada again, this time in the Tomei/Cusco Subaru. The fearsome-looking and very consistent car was only 0.017 of a second behind Empringham's EVO. The fastest Australian contender, Warren Luff in a Prep'd Motorsport Lotus Elise finished in the 4th place, missing out on a podium spot by a only half a second.

An action-filled two days, both on and off the track ensured no spectator went home unsatisfied. For a full list of results, lap times and placings click here.

The QLD WRX Club has organised with Safe Drive Training to run a weekend away at Armidale over the last weekend in March – the 26th to the 28th

The NSW WRX Club is also coming along to join in the fun

We anticipate most participants being able to leave our respective home bases around lunchtime on the Friday, travelling to Pembroke Holiday Village in Armidale to stay on Friday night.

Early Saturday we will head out to the huge and very well equipped Armidale Training facility where breakfast will be served and all participants will be given a series of exercises to do including slalom, garaging, swerve and evade, power on understeer/lift off oversteer and ABS. The basic idea of the weekend is to pass on the main performance car control skills. These exercises will also cater for your partners who don't normally drive the vehicles, as well as some time allowed for children down to 14 years of age.

Saturday will be devoted to this training and includes lunch as well. The facility is a concrete slab of approx 300m square with a lecture building and surface water controls, so the majority of driving will be in slippery conditions allowing true ABS testing and closing apexes etc.

We will join together on Saturday night for a slap up BBQ dinner at our accommodation then off to bed, up early Sunday, pack up your gear and back out to the facility for a wet pad motorkhana competition – starting after breakfast.

This is not going to be easily won by the experts, as we will run it to CAMS tests and rules, including points deductions for wrong way and cone strikes. It should be loads of fun on the slippery wet pad. The more powerful the vehicle the harder it is to control in these types of events so anyone would be in with a win.

We will be finished by midday and present some trophies including some comical ones so that we keep the weekend fun feeling alive. Then off back to our homes.

Anyone interested should have a look at this presentation and then contact the WRX Club of Queensland.

This Club meeting will be held at Fulcrum Suspension in Browns Plains

As the 2009 motorsport year draws to a close, WRX Club Queensland successfully wrapped up the Interclub Challenge Queensland for the third year in a row with a total of 64 points. This was a hotly contested series this year with MG Car Club and Holden Sporting Car Club both taking out second place with 59 points.

WRX Club’s Stephen Faulks took outright individual champion for the year with 917 points. He was pushed all the way to the end, only securing the title at the last event over Holden Sporting Car Club’s Troy Moffit on 903 points with MG Car Club’s Malcolm Spiden rounding out the top three with 745 points.

A big thanks to all the people that helped out with organising ICQ for the year and to the sponsors.

Outright Winning Club and Outright Driver Champion trophies

The final IWMAC Autocross for the year was held on Sunday 15th, and the action was as hot as the 35 degree temperatures!!

With a completely resurfaced track that was prepared over the last 2 weeks by the volunteers from the IWMAC club, it was a smooth and fast day with the 47 drivers all having a great day.

WRX Club’s Stephen Faulks headed into the last round in outright first place, leaving Mick McMillan the challenge of needing to pull out a PB in the last lap to secure yet another first place on the dirt.

Both cars went out on the last run knowing what they had to do. Stephen put down a fast yet safe time of 1:34.64 for the combined standing and flying. Mick, with it all to do, came out flying and completely blitzed the field putting down a devastatingly fast PB and fastest lap of the day with a 1:33.25 putting him back into his familiar first place position by 0.75 seconds - Congratulations Mick!

Matt Mingin put in a great effort with an outright fifth position and Alicia Oldfield pulled out a first in the ladies class.

The day started brilliantly with 12 cars meeting at BP Yatala for a cruise through the countryside. Glenn gave a welcome chat to current and new members and gave a brief outline of times for stops etc. Luke and Andrew rode shotgun and did a great job keeping the group together. We drove along Stanmore Road towards Beaudesert and as we neared the Bearded Dragon, Shane’s car gave up the ghost and he had to pull out. A line of vintage cars saw us all turn our heads as we headed along Beaudesert Beenleigh Road.

We drove through Beaudesert then headed towards Rathdowney through Laravale and Tamrookum. A right turn into Kooralbyn Resort and it was morning tea time. The Resort is now closed and much of the resort is overgrown and a ghost town. We ate Carrot cake and for variety, satay chicken wings and cold drinks. Some great pictures were taken and Rob was having such a great time that he joined the club on the spot. Everyone mingled and got to know each other more.

The gold coin donation went towards Ronald McDonald house and we raised $41.00 for a much needed cause. Thank you to everyone who donated.

From Kooralbyn we headed back to Beaudesert and up the road to Tamborine Mountain. A sharp turn and then we were at Thunderbird Park for some volleyball. The cars looked great all lined up on the grass. Volleyball was a huge success and with a scout camp set up right round the court it provided a captive audience (who really wants to pull down tents anyway – watching adults try and play volleyball is much more fun!).

The shot of the day went to Denise when she managed to balance the ball on a branch in the nearby massive tree. Scott came to the rescue and scaled the tree like he did it every day. Glenn offered to catch Scott from the tree but he got down with no problems at all. Some great pics to show and we sure had some laughs.

From here it was back down the mountain to the Bearded Dragon Tavern for lunch, drinks and a chat. Another great photo opportunity for the cars.

The day was enjoyed by all and we are all looking forward to the next one.

Thanks to Andrew and Luke for bringing up the rear and keeping everyone in line.

A massive thanks to APC for hosting the WRX Club Queensland’s November monthly meeting at their workshop in Underwood.

The night started off with a great sausage sizzle where the APC mechanics showed their skills with the tongs! If Nick’s boys work on cars as good as they cook, your car will be in good hands!

Nick then strapped an embarrassingly standard MY04 STi to the dyno and talked the 38 attendees though the processes that APC conducts when tuning any car that drives into their work shop. Starting with basic, yet thorough checks of things like your fuel system, right through to using a smoke machine to pressurise the intake system and check for leaks (yes to test leaks not to have a disco with!)

From here the standard tuning maps were read off the factroy ECU with Motorsport ECU Editor and displayed on the big screen. Nick managed to walk the attendees through an incredibly complex system without losing anyone along the way – a credit to him.

With some minor adjustments to the map, Nick flashed the ECU and manage to smooth out the boost curve and fuel delivery system resulting in a gain of 17Kw at the wheels (that’s a 10.7% power increase without any fine tuning). With another 1 or 2 modifications Nick was confident that he could find up to another 8 or 9Kw. That is a massive 16% increase over standard with zero bolt-on modifications.

Congratulations to Lincoln Eldridge for winning the lucky door prize of a free tune carried out by Nick.

Overall it was a fantastic night where APC shared heaps of tuning tips with the group and you cannot over look the show bags with lots of goodies.

Thanks to Nick and his team for holding a great event!

Contact Nick on 3341 7223 or check out the support section of the APC website

Congratulations to Mick McMillan for taking out the event in his Evo9 with a total time of 4mins 44.15secs followed closely by Neville Scott in his 2.2L WRX with a time of 4mins 48.95secs. Stephen Faulks managed to bring his STi home in third place with a total time of 4mins 49.81Secs.

Being the first event that the club has run, the nerves were high when the day started out looking a little wet and dim, but when the storm cleared and the sun came out with less than an hour before start time the day was set to run and with 6 competition runs and an expression session at the end, the day finished well.

A huge thanks to the CAMS official, flaggies, time keepers and most of all the competitors that came to make the day a success.

This also wrapped up the ICC series for the year which saw Stephen Faulks take out the outright individual champion for the year over Troy Moffit from HSCC. For the third year in a row, WRC Club Qld managed to take home the champion club for the year too! A very successful year work the club!!!

Grab a look at the results for the day in outright order or check out Natsoft for the official times.

Congratulations to Mick McMillan and his blue Evo 9 who took first outright at a hotly contested IWMAC Dirt Sprint run in a very successful Day-Night format. Stephen Faulks managed to pull out a 4th place 4.05 seconds off the pace in his white MY05 STi, followed by Matt Mingin peddling his red classic to a very successful 6th place 7.84 second off the leader.

The event was a little different with the Day-Night format. It started off at 3pm with 2 runs of the short track. Despite the heat which resulted in the water truck having to go out frequently to suppress the dust, the afternoon session went off without a hitch.

The group then took time out for dinner as the lights were moved into their final position and fired up. As the sun set over the horizon the lights successfully took over the job of showing where the drivers needed to point their cars and it was race time again! This time it was the long configuration which proved to be hugely enjoyable for both drivers and spectators.

Although the track was a little slippery all day and the session times were off the money by about 3 seconds throughout the day it was a massively successful and well organised day. As with any event, organisation is the key, so a massive thanks from the WRX Club Qld to the guys and girls that help setup the track, set up the lights and the flaggies and officials.

Again, congratulations to Mick for again taking out a first place in his environment of choice – The Dirt.

WRX Club Qld had a strong team in the ever popular Interclub Challenge round consisting of both navigations and speed events. Neville Scott and Mick McMillan pulled off an excellent win, followed closely by Jono McCowan and Simon Grounds in 2nd and Stephen Faulks and Victor Vo in 3rd. In his first TRE event our president managed to bring home a happy go lucky 19th place, but ran with a smile all day and managed to convince us that Motorsport is not all about winning.

Both Nev and Steve have in-car footage on youtube. So if you are wondering what these events are like, take a look.

After the 1, 2, 3 finish, WRX Club Qld is again in first place going into the last ICC round and will be working hard on the dirt to ensure that the ICC Trophy is ours for the 4th consecutive year.

The club cruise started at Logan Hyperdome, headed south taking in roads up and over Mount Tamborine via Oxenford and up to Natural Arch for a spot of morning tea and a walk. From there the cruise headed on to Beechmont where is stopped for some photos and a walk. It then headed into Canungra where Wood fired Pizza was on the lunch menu at the Canungra Pub.

Congratulations to Neville Scott who has managed to shake not only his 4 year run of being the bride’s maid, but also the minor niggles that he was having with his car to bring home a well rounded win in the Ironman Weekend held 31st July – 2nd August. Stephen Faulks manage to secure 3rd place over the weekend in his first attempt at the Ironman.
